Christmas
always means a lot of great food and drinks. Let me tell you about the ones we
get really excited about in Switzerland.
Let’s start
with Christmas cookies, we have a lot of special ones here and I don’t even
know if they exist in other countries, maybe under a different name. My
favourite ones are called “Mailänderli”, all you need is butter, sugar, flour,
eggs, salt and a bit of lemon.
Other
popular cookies we have are “Brunsli” (some type of brownies), “Chräbeli”
(Anise cookies), “Zimtsterne” (cinnamon stars/cookies) and Spitzbuben (normal
cookies with jam in between).
We usually celebrate properly on Christmas Eve and not on Christmas Day,
we also have the „Christkind“ bringing the presents not Santa. Anyway, the
popular dinner in Switzerland is Fondue Chinoise (meat fondue) and then also
the soup afterwards with a bit of cognac, because the meat is actually dipped
in bouillon (broth)
and it’s really yummy.
Our Santa always comes December 6th and
he brings lots of food: oranges, mandrines, nuts and chocolate. The kids get
really excited about these.
Although it actually comes from Italy
and the Italian speaking part of Switzerland we love our Panetone during the
Christmas time. Nowadays you can buy them in all kinds of flavours, there is
something for everyone.
When it comes to drinks the ONE is
definitely mulled wine (Glühwein), I’m in love with this drink, I could drink
it all year long. We also like prosecco or some bubbly with a flavoured liquor
(like strawberry). Hot cocoa and punches are very popular for non alcoholic
drinks.
In general cinnamon is really popular,
in drinks, in cookies etc. I’m not a big fan, but there are still plenty of
christmassy things for me to choose from.
