Hi Carys, firstly, can you sum up in a few sentences what Sunkissed is about?
Sunkissed is a vampire story with a twist. Dawn Summers, the
central character, is on her death bed when she’s saved by the mysterious Dr
Moralus, whom all the people within her village of Fandova, fear. But Dawn’s
recovery comes at a cost. Soon she notices something sinister happening to
herself and a strange thirst overwhelming her each night.
Without giving too much away Sunkissed is very much a story about
love, redemption and the fight to remain true to yourself at all costs.
And where did the inspiration for this novel come
from?
I’ve always been a big fan of the
vampire genre. I love shows like True Blood and Vampire Diaries and was keen to
create my own story within the mythology. Sunkissed
is very much the vampire story I’ve always wanted to read.
I understand you’re both published via a publisher
and you self-publish your books, what made you make this decision?
Sunkissed is the first book I’ve self-published which is kind
of daunting as like you say, I normally have the support of a publisher so it’s
scary to be going it alone. Not many publishers are receptive to the vampire
genre at the moment, they kind of feel that it’s had its day. But I don’t
agree. I think that there are people out there who would love a good vampire
story (myself included) and so rather than let Sunkissed gather dust in a drawer somewhere I made the decision to
publish it myself. I love the story and am keen to share it with others who
have a passion for paranormal stories like I do.
Which method of publishing do you personally
prefer?
It’s probably too early to make a
decision on that one as I don’t feel I’ve had enough experience with self-publishing
yet. Ask me again in a year or so! Lol. With Sunkissed I’ve done everything myself, even creating the cover.
It’s been nice to have that kind of level of control, but also scary as there
is no one to fall back on, no editorial team to hold my hand and reassure me
that everything will be fine…
If you could co-write a book with any author, dead
or alive, who would it be and why?
Hands down Holly Black. That girl
has style. Often when I read a book it’s hard to switch off the writer in me.
And when I read The Coldest Girl in
Coldtown every decision Holly had made had me shouting, ‘yes, I so would
have done that’. I feel like as writers, we are both on the same page so to
speak (terrible pun I know). I think we have a similar style and approach to
our writing and think we’d work well together and create something awesome.
Also, if you like vampires and have not read The Coldest Girl in Coldtown you need to drop what you are doing
and get a copy immediately. It’s amazing I loved every page of it.
What does your ideal writing day look like? Are you
a planner or a panster?
I am an excessive planner. I plan
out all my books before I start them, chapter by chapter. Then I break down
what I need to do in terms of word count. So every morning when I sit down at
my laptop my goal for the day is already laid out for me – 4K to write and x, y
and z needs to occur. This kind of approach helps me stay focused and prevents
me letting myself procrastinate, because I already know what needs to be done.
Once I’ve hit my daily target I reward myself with Jelly Babies and Netflix,
it’s all about the incentives! ; )
What’s next for you? Any more books you’re able to
tell us about?
2016 is an exciting year for me.
I’ve got Sunkissed coming out in January and then towards the end of the year
the first book in my new Princess Trilogy, Paper
Princess, is being released with Accent YA. I’m currently in the midst of
writing the second two books in the series so if I’m a bit absent from social
media in the coming months that’s why!
What are your main new years resolutions for this
year? Writing and otherwise?
This year I want to finish my Princess
Trilogy and write several other books I’ve got on the backburner. I’ve also
resolved to try and snack less as I’m a terrible grazer. But given that today
I’ve already had several cheeky biscuits and a cupcake it’s not looking too
good…
